Leeds Golf Design were appointed by Thornbury Golf Club in 2024 to prepare a long-term golf course masterplan, primarily focused on bunker renovation and strategic course improvements.
The project focused on reducing unnecessary bunker sand area, improving bunker positioning and playability, enhancing golf strategy and strengthening the natural landscape character of the course. The proposals also included fairway and green surround refinements, drainage improvements, woodland and gorse management, together with sustainability-led maintenance reductions through reshaping selected bunkers into natural grassy hollows. Overall, the proposed bunker sand area was reduced by approximately 43%.
The renovation programme began in Autumn/Winter 2024–25 with the completion of the first construction phase, followed by a second phase of works during winter 2025/26.
